Innovations by Sega to the gaming industry

I have been a Sega fan for over 30 years. In addition to creating great groundbreaking games and consoles over the years, Sega also has made contributions and improvements to the gaming industry that many of us take for granted today. Many of these innovations were way ahead of their time. Most of these innovations were failures, but they led the way to the devices and innovations that we see today. Below is a list of some of the contributions that Sega has made that are now standard.

Console online gaming: Online gaming has existed for quite some time now. There were even modems available for consoles as far back as the Atari 2600. Sega originally had ambitions with the Sega Genesis (aka Megadrive) to be online with the Telegenesis modem. Those of us who had a launch year model one Genesis remember the advertisement for the Telegenesis on the back of the Genesis box. Although the modem was never released in most markets, Sega never forgot its ambitions for having its console online. Sega released a modem for the Sega Saturn called the Netlink, which even included a web browser. Finally, Sega included a 56k modem with every Sega Dreamcast. They released the service SegaNet a year later, which could be seen as a precursor to online services such as Xbox Live
