I like using a tablet more for reading ebooks, emails, social media, YouTube and other streaming video apps. Anything that is more keyboard intensive I prefer a laptop. iPads have a much better quality screen than my laptop does so watching videos on them is ideal. I like your comment about the lightweight nature of an iPad is ideal. Great for short trips. It also has great battery life.
